COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

BACKGROUND

The mission of The Nature Conservancy’s Coral
Triangle Center (TNC-CTC) is to strengthen resilient
and sustainable networks of Marine Protected Areas
(MPAs) designed to survive, managed to last and
connected like strings of pearls across the
‘bull’s eye of marine biodiversity’, also known
as the ‘coral triangle’ in the seas of Southeast
Asia. CTC fulfills its mission by building capacity
for effective and sustainable MPA management in a
well-defined portfolio of high priority sites, and for
design and implementation of MPA networks at scale
across the region. CTC provides technical and
management support, conservation training and science,
policy and financing, communication and outreach
support to MPA platform sites in the Coral Triangle.


From their base in Bali, CTC will enhance marine
conservation capacity through state-of-the art
scientific support, development and implementation of
targeted training modules, support to government
agencies with policy development, and by raising
conservation awareness through high quality
communications and outreach. CTC will deploy an
outstanding multi-disciplinary team of conservation
professionals to perform at optimal levels through
efficient organizational, operational, HR and finance
systems and supported by effective fundraising
capacity. This job description is for a Communications
Specialist who will support the communications across
the CTC program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Communications Specialist has the responsibility
of providing support in developing and implementing
communication and outreach strategies to increase and
sustain public awareness and support of CTC and its
field-based work. Will develop and maintain strong
local and national media contacts and identify targets
and sources for conservation messages. Responds to
media requests and assists with developing and
implementing media strategies and write new releases.
Develops, maintains, and distributes CTC background
information, fact sheets, website and related media
files. Provide communication and media relations
training and consultation services to field staff.
Establishes and develops cooperative relationships
with local and non-local NGOs to promote, expand and
implement CTC’s initiatives. Provide platforms to
ensure the exchange of information and experiences
among NGOs and CTC through the Indonesian NGO and
individual networks dealing with coastal and marine
issues to further build CTC’s constituency. The
Communications Specialist reports to the CTC
Communications Manager.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Environmental
Education or related field with at least 5 years
related experience or equivalent combination.
Ability to sell ideas to a wide variety of people and
interests groups.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills,
including public-speaking skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to act as spokesperson for CTC to increase
communication, dialogue and constituency among local
and international NGOs.
Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, Excel and
desktop publishing. May require database management
skills with ability to produce reports. Ability to
use advanced computer functions including navigating
the Internet.
Ability to organize time and manage diverse
activities. Meet deadlines.

Duties may require non-routine analysis, research and
follow-through.

RESPONSIBILITY/ OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
Provide support in developing and implementing
communication and outreach strategies.
Provide support in developing and maintaining strong
local and national media contacts and identify targets
and sources for conservation messages.
Conduct media monitoring and provide news clips and
reports.
Provide support in developing and publishing
communications materials on CTC.
Maintenance of the CTC website(s).
Identify key NGOs in Bali, Jakarta, and other relevant
sites; collect key concerns and issues among the
identified NGOs; and provide analysis on their
possible impact on CTC.
Develop criteria to measure improved constituency
among NGOs for CTC.
May provide recommendations for other communication
activities and possible collaboration opportunities
between NGOs and CTC.
May supervise volunteers and/or interns, and/or
temporary staff.

COMMUNICATIONS/ INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
Communication and presentation skills; ability to
persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse
groups including donors, board members, the public and
others.
Solicit program support through clear written
communications, including proposal writing and other
written materials.
Leverages constructive and effective relationships
inside and outside the Conservancy.
Work and communicate with a wide range of people –
vendors, the public, program leadership, donors,
media, and others.
Formulate and clearly communicate ideas to others.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Willingness to travel and work flexible hours,
including weekends, holidays and evenings.
Ability to work under stress during peak workload
periods.
Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or
physical strain. Work environment involves only
infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
